CBACFC EVENT AND ACTIVITY REGISTRATION OPENS!

07/21/2010 to 09/01/2010

On behalf of the Chesapeake Bay Area Combined Federal Campaign (CBACFC), we want to once again welcome you to the 2010 campaign, and need to take a moment and update you on the current status of the final approval of participants.  Unfortunately, we are once again experiencing significant delays at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) regarding the validation of our campaign's local charity list.  As a result, we have not been able to send out final approval letters, to include the assignment or verification of your organization's five digit code.  We regret the delay, and will be providing this notification to all participating charities as soon as we receive final confirmations from OPM.

As indicated in the initial approval letter, sent to your organization in April 2010, there will be opportunities for your organization to participate in a variety of events and activities that are held at federal agencies throughout the campaign season (September 1- December 15) in our campaign area.  Although the final validation of all charities has not been completed, we have decided to open the registration process for your organization to indicate any interest you may have in participating in these events and activities.

In an effort to streamline the process, and ensure your organization is provided with opportunities that best fit your availability and location, we have developed an online registration process for participation in this program.  In order for your organization to be contacted regarding attendance at these events and activities, this registration process must be completed.  Our campaign will not be contacting unregistered organizations unless one of our federal agencies specifically requests us to do so.  You may register up until 1 September 2010, after that date, you will need to contact our staff directly to be added to the event registration list.

Once your registration is complete, you will receive follow up information from our staff verifying registration, and providing you with materials outlining the event process and your organization's participation and responsibilities in that process.  Failure to comply with the process provided may result in your organization's removal from the event registration list.

Registration can be performed using the link provided below.  Please note that the 5-digit code is a required field during the registration process.  If you are a new charity and have not received your code assignment, please enter xxxxx in this field.  We will update this information on our database when we receive the codes from OPM.  If you have previously been assigned a 5-digit code, it will remain unchanged, so please enter that code.

Again, we apologize for the delay in final validation, we will provide updated information as we receive it.  At this time, we do not have any additional information

Attention Federal Employees! Would You Like to Be a Loaned Executive?

03/01/2010 to 08/31/2010

What is a Loaned Executive?  Each year, our campaign is staffed by a small, but enthusiastic group of federal employees, called "Loaned Executives" (LEs for short).  These federal personnel are loaned to our campaign from their home agencies for a period of approximately four months (August 16, 2010 - December 17, 2010), and are the movers and shakers of the CFC world.  LEs partner with a variety of local Federal Agencies to help manage and administer their individual CFC campaigns.  LEs help plan events, ensure their assigned agencies receive campaign materials, and collect campaign pledges as well.  The LE experience is a great developmental and diversification tour that provides federal employees the opportunity to gain or improve a variety of critical skills, to include public speaking, project management, and interpersonal skills just to name a few.  To learn more, please take a few moments and review our Loaned Executive Program Brochure.  If you are interested in being an LE Team Member for 2010, or would like additional information regarding the program, please contact Linda Siegle, Chair of the Local Federal Coordinating Committee at 410-962-4049 or via email to lindasiegle.baltfeb@verizon.net.

Why Give to the CFC? Leaders Share Their Thoughts

10/20/2009

Kathy Crotty Zuback, Vice Chair, National Security Agency CFC

For all the years that I have donated to the Combined Federal Campaign, I never really thought about the effects on the individual beneficiaries of these programs.  Then my daughter Jessica was born with a rare chromosome abnormality.  When the geneticist described the probable effects, we were devastated; moderate to severe mental retardation and many physical defects--heart, eyes, ears, and overall muscle disabilities that could result in her being bedridden for life.  For the first two years we struggled to come to grips with this news and tried to find ways to change that outcome.  Then we found a research society dedicated to Chromosome 18 abnormalities.  A geneticist--and mother of a child similar to our daughter--founded this incredible group.  Thanks to the wonderful work of this group, we have every  hope that our daughter will live a productive, and to some degree, a self-sufficient life.  Every day we, the research group, learn a bit more...and my daughter loses less ground to her peers.

Jessica is missing a piece of her 18th chromosome and has an extra piece of chromosome 19.  Such an arrangement was not thought to be "compatible with life", so there is not a lot of information available for parents or doctors.  The research group provided my husband and I with much-needed direction on important medical intervention possiblitilies.  For our daughter, this resulted in four surgeries before 27 months of age (one of which was open heart surgery during which we used the services of another CFC-sponsored group, providing a place to stay on hospital grounds).  Of equal importance, their support helped us to obtain needed therapies; since 12 months of age Jessica has received weekly therapy sessions from four separate therapists, initially in our home and now in a special school environment.  In addition, Jessica receives special riding lessons from another CFC-supported group.

Living with a special needs child can be overwhelming at times, but when I compare what could have been to how well she is doing now, I am grateful.  For Jessica, perhaps the most significant impact of the CFC-supported research society is their discovery of growth hormone (GH) imbalances in children like Jessica.  Their research, not yet conclusive, indicates that synthetic GH injections have increased IQ by over 30 points!  As a result, Jessica now receives injections six days a week--and we are seeing some incredible improvements.  In fact, the most recent evaluations seem to indicate that she WILL be able to achieve some level of independency!

Thanks to the research group--and to folks supporting CFC organizations--my daughter has a REAL chance for a "normal" life.  To those of you who participate in the CFC, whatever your chosen allocation, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Dennis H Smith, Director VAMHCSDennis H. Smith, Director, Veterans Affairs, Maryland Health Care System

Considering the economic uncertainty our nation is facing, we realize that VA Maryland Health Care System employees are also vulnerable to times of hardship.  Today, many people are wondering how they will provide for their families or make their next mortgage payment.  That is why we encourage the staff to join us in supporting important health and human service agencies by contributing to this year's CFC.

Capt. Robert Brennan, US Navy, Director, Division of Mathematics and Science, United States Naval Academy

CFC provides an easy and effective way to easily support each of our personal charitable plans.  No matter what your cause--cancer, domestic violence, poverty, etc., and no matter if it's a local, national or international organization--CFC can accept your charitable donation.  We all can make a difference.

George King IRSGeorge W. King, Senior Commissioner's Representative, Mid-Atlantic, Acting Senior Commissioner's Representative, DC Metro, Internal Revenue Service

In 2003, my wife and I were vacationing at Niagara Falls when she went into labor prematurely.  Our first child was born eight days later at Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo, far away from our home in New York City.  He would be in their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for the next two months before he was strong enough to airlift to our home hospital in Manhattan.  During those two months, a charity provided us with room and board and friendly faces while we were in Buffalo.  For that, we shall be forever grateful!  Our son is now six years old and healthy as can be.
